Can’t Afford a Gym Membership? You’re Not the Only One!


Look, it’s hard to go to the gym once you become a parent. At the end of the day, when you’ve given it your all and the kids are finally in bed, the last thing you want to do is get ready and head outside. You want to just crash (and maybe even cry, if you have a toddler like myself).

But dad-hood doesn’t have to mean that you should let yourself go. Yes, money and priorities shift and some of us can’t afford a gym membership every month, but believe me when I say that you can get in a great workout around the house, even while the little guys run around.

And forget the expensive diet and special ingredients that need to be added to the grocery list. There are a few helpful tips to staying in shape affordably and effortlessly. No gym required. No fancy foods. Promise.

  1. Buy Frozen

There’s a big misconception about frozen foods. They are not bad for you. That is…if you’re looking at the right stuff. Instead of trying to keep the fridge stocked with fresh fruits and veggies, try and opt for a supply of frozen ingredients.

Veggies and fruits are flash frozen at their freshest and stay that way until you eat them. No more rotten broccoli or fermented peaches. Buy frozen and always have fresh ingredients on hand.

  1. Check the Labels

Is cheap protein good or bad for you? It depends on what you’re looking at. Always read the nutrition labels and see for yourself. Products high in protein, with minimal fat, and low in calories are what you should be looking for.

  1. Stay Away from Organic

Sigh. Don’t even get me started on organic foods. They cost more money, have no proven advantages, and spoil way faster than regular stuff. Yes, they are grown or raised without the use pf pesticides, but if your properly wash your food this shouldn’t be an issue.

Another option, if you or your partner insist on buying organic, try shopping local at farmer’s markets to keep the cost down.

The Nitty Gritty

Okay, we’ve established that a diet doesn’t have to mean expensive foods and well stocked, fresh veggies. There’s ways around that. Now it’s time to take a look at the workout itself. Because, let’s face it, that’s really why you clicked on this article, right?

Working out at home does not mean you have to resort to things like Pilates and aerobics, either, guys. Come on. Think about it. All you really need is something heavy to lift, a place to run, and something to give resistance.

You may not have the space to have an actual home gym, and that’s total okay, too. Here is a list of the best home exercise equipment you need in order to get in your daily workout without spending (too much) money.

1) Exercise mat. Make it a blue or black one so you feel manly

2) Pair of medium dumbbells (or heavy ones, if you’re of the “buffer” nature)

3) The great outdoors

That’s pretty much the world’s shortest list of workout gear, am I right?

Around the House Workout

Okay, okay. I know what you’re thinking. What kind of workout can you do with this? Yes, it’s not going to give you the full effect of a big, fancy gym. But it will keep you in shape, trust me.

A Sample Workout using These Items Would Look Like This:

  1. Push Ups on your manly mat
  2. Bodyweight Squat while holding the dumbbells
  3. Bodyweight Lunges with a dumbbell in each hand
  4. Sit ups on your manly mat
  5. Burpees on your manly mat
  6. Running and/or jogging using this thing called OUTSIDE.


These are things that you cold easily get your kids involved in, too. Oh, and did I mention you can use your manly mat?
